If you’re looking for some of the best things to do in Taveuni, Fiji, make sure to hike the Lavena Coastal Walk. The Coastal walk is part of the Bouma National Heritage Park. The Lavena Coastal Walk is a moderate hike, with great views and a great waterfall to dip in at the end. The Lavena Coastal Walk is a popular hiking trail located on the island of Taveuni in Fiji. It offers breathtaking views of the coastline and takes you through lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and stunning waterfalls.

How long is the Lavena Coastal Walk?

The Lavena Coastal Walk is 5km each way and begins at Lavena village. The walk begins at the Lavena Lodge and ends at the Wainibau Falls. It usually takes about 3-4 hours to complete, depending on your pace and the time spent at various points of interest along the way. From the lodge, the walk follows the trail between the forested village and the white sand of Lavena Beach. The trail will take you to the waterfalls. It is a moderate hike as its relatively flat, most of it is right along the coastline and the forest. There are some small little hills. There are some slippery spots, depending on how much rain they’ve gotten recently.

How to get to Lavena Coastal Walk

The Lavena Coastal Walk starts at Lavena, located on the southeast side of Taveuni. The road to the trail does not go past Lavena. Know that if you are staying on the south or west side of the island, the only way to get to Lavena is to go all the way to the north and then down. We stayed at Coconut Grove, which is on the north of the island, and it took about an hour to get the beginning of the trail.

What does the Lavena Coastal Walk cost?

When you arrive at Lavena, there is an office where you will check-in at. This is where you’ll pay, use the restrooms, and sign the trail ledger. Even if you aren’t using a guide, you’ll pay 30 FJD (about 15 USD) each person. We paid 165 FJD (about 85 USD) for the trail, our guide, and one-way boat trip back.

Do you need a guide on Lavena Coastal Walk?

A guide is not necessary. The trail is well maintained, and there are some signs along the way. There is a chance you take a wrong turn without a guide, but it’s pretty easy to find your way alone. We ended up using a guide, Carlo, who brought his 2 young kids along. All the guides live in the village, so you are supporting the locals. What we found great about the guide for the walk, was he really showed us the true Fijian culture. The cool thing about the guide is that they will tell you about the local plants, and show you things along the way so its not just a walk, its more of an educational tour. They stop and show you different flowers and different plants, and he cut down some coconut and some papaya for us to eat.  It wasn’t just them directing us, it was more of like you get to know them and the country, which was nice, because this was our very first FIjian experience, literally the day after we arrived in Fiji. I think thats probably what helped having a guide is like we really got to learn more about the culture and the people and the landscape. The guide is very personable, you can go faster or slower, its just you and the guide, not a big group.

Can I swim in the waterfalls along the Lavena Coastal Walk?

Yes, there are several stunning waterfalls along the Lavena Coastal Walk, and swimming is usually allowed. There are 2 waterfalls at the end, with a big swimming hole that is great for swimming in. However, it’s important to exercise caution and follow any safety guidelines provided by the authorities. The water can be deep in some areas, so only swim if you are a confident swimmer.

The Lavena Coastal Walk is a moderate hike. Towards the end, as you get closer to the waterfalls, there is some uphill climbing involved. The walk along the coast has multiple terrains, including the white sand, blue lagoon, tropical rainforest,
