The Perfect 3 Days in Tikehau Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival + Explore the Island
Morning: After your short flight from Tahiti to Tikehau, most accommodations will arrange for a pick-up or boat transfer. Once you arrive, you’ll want to unpack, breathe in the salty air, and get your bearings – it’s truly paradise here.
Afternoon: Grab your bike and head out around the island. It’s a small island, so it won’t take long to explore. In the middle of town, there’s the bakery, where you’ll want to put in your order for fresh baked bread, and a small grocery store, if you need any snacks (although not many options).

Evening: By sunset, you’ll want to be back at your bungalow. Grab a Hinano beer and sit on the deck as the sky turns fire-orange over the lagoon. Sunsets on this island are truly magical. For dinner, enjoy fresh ceviche, grilled tuna, or poisson cru (Polynesia’s version of poke) at your resort. If you’re venturing out, there are only a few snack shacks on the island, and they open limited days and hours so check ahead of time. Our favorite restaurants to eat on the island were Chez Angie, Snack Ohina, and Restaurant Chez Justine, but again make sure to check their hours.
Day 2: Snorkel with the Manta Rays
Day 2 in Tikehau is all about exploring the lagoon. Get your camera ready, because today’s scenery is unreal.
Morning: Head out on a lagoon tour
Kick off the day with a lagoon tour. The Hititemanava Tikehau Excursion will take you to the best places in Tikehau, starting with swimming with the manta rays. On the lagoon tour you’ll get to explore bird island and then have lunch at a local Fishermans village. Wade through warm water, explore tiny tidepools, and soak in the untouched beauty of this deserted paradise. You’ll visit small, beautiful islands that make you feel like you’re alone in the middle of the ocean.

Midday: Lagoon picnic on a private motu
Next on the tour, your guide will anchor on a motu, a small, private islet. Here, they’ll prepare a traditional Polynesian picnic: grilled fish, fresh fruit, and coconut bread served with stunning 360° lagoon views. You’ll have some time to relax on the island, where you can nap in a hammock or snorkel right off the shore. It’s like owning your own island for a few hours.

After lunch they’ll take you to the Tuheiava pass, the atoll’s only ocean access point, and one of the best dive sites in French Polynesia. Expect to see manta rays, reef sharks, and massive schools of fish. This is a great snorkel/dive spot that is suitable for all ages and levels, and tons of sea-life!

Evening: Stargazing + visit the Manta Rays
Once arriving back from your full day lagoon tour, you’ll want to relax. Because Tikehau is such a small island there is very little light pollution, which makes it great for seeing the stars. Tikehau has minimal light pollution, so the Milky Way puts on a spectacular show. We also recommend going to the dock in Tikehau village, where you can see tons of manta rays hanging out due to the bright light on the dock. If you don’t swim with them, this is a great alternative to see them up-close.

Day 3: Explore the island + Chill Time
On your final day of this 3-day Tikehau itinerary, it’s time to explore the island.
Morning: Take your bike to visit La cloche de Hina, on the west side of the island. This is Hina’s bell, a giant coral in the shape of a bell. The coral stands 10 feet high and is on a gorgeous white sandy beach.
Afternoon: Kayaking, paddleboarding, or reading on the beach
Tikehau is such a magical island, something about it that is truly special. You want to sit and enjoy the peacefulness of this island. Borrow a kayak or SUP board and explore the water, or just read a book under a swaying palm. There’s no rush – Tikehau is made for relaxation.
Evening: Sunset at the beach
For your final evening, enjoy the sunset from Hina’s bell. Take time to truly soak up the magic of this island. Take a last swim in the lagoon or enjoy a beach walk.

How to Get to Tikehau
Getting to Tikehau takes a little effort- but trust us, it’s worth every second.
First, you’ll have to fly into Tahiti (PPT), French Polynesia’s international hub. From there, take a domestic flight with Air Tahiti to Tikehau (TIH). The flight takes about 1 hour and offers amazing aerial views of atolls.
Flights fill up quickly, especially during the high season, so book early. Roundtrip fares from Tahiti to Tikehau can range from $350–$500 USD depending on the time of year. We paid $479/person for our trip when we went in September 2024.
When you arrive at Tikehau airport, you’ll land on a tiny strip of land with a charming open-air airport. The view as you land is beautiful! It’s all very casual and refreshingly slow-paced.
Most resorts offer boat or car transfers directly from the airport. Most places include this in your booking but always confirm in advance to avoid delays.
